This is about that half.
The hardware doesn't fail loudly — it fails quietly
You'd expect a device that's wrong to tell you so. Mostly, it doesn't.
In the largest recent look at why people stop wearing activity trackers, researchers publishing in the Journal of Medical Internet Research surveyed 475 people in 2023 and compared their answers to a 2016 cohort. Among people who'd quit, device malfunction was the single most common reason given — cited by 33% of former users, ahead of disliking the device (25%), losing it (17%), and finding it hard to understand (17%) (JMIR / PMC). Retention has actually improved since 2016 — current users in 2023 reported a median 18 months of use, up from 7 — but hardware failure, not boredom, is now the leading reason people walk away when they do.
Failure here rarely looks dramatic. A sensor drifts. A battery ages and stops holding a charge past noon. Nothing crashes or throws an error — the device keeps producing numbers, just quietly less trustworthy ones, and you have no way of knowing which day that started.
Skin irritation is common, and mostly not what you think
If you've had a ring or band leave a rash, it's probably not a metal allergy. Most of it is irritant contact dermatitis — inflammation from direct physical or chemical irritation rather than an immune reaction to a specific material (Healthline). Sweat, lotion, and soap residue get trapped between the band and your skin for hours at a stretch, and that sustained dampness — not the metal — is usually the actual irritant.

Owning more than one only compounds it
If one wearable is a hassle, two is worse, because they don't agree with each other. Recovery and readiness scores are proprietary — Oura and WHOOP compute them from different weightings of different inputs, so the same night's sleep can produce meaningfully different numbers on each device.
